Human Traffic follows five friends in Cardiff who endure dull, dead-end jobs during the week and live for the weekend. Jip, Lulu, Koop, Nina and Moff spend Friday night through Monday morning on a nonstop circuit of clubs, parties, music and drugs. Jip and Lulu each carry relationship troubles into the weekend, Nina and Koop's bond is strained by his distrust, and Moff, who supplies the group, chases a quick high. The film is set in the British rave scene of the late 1990s.
Justin Kerrigan wrote and directed the film, his first feature, with Allan Niblo and Emer McCourt producing. John Simm plays Jip, Shaun Parkes is Koop, Nicola Reynolds is Nina, Lorraine Pilkington is Lulu and Danny Dyer is Moff. The production involved 61 credited cast members and 66 credited crew, and it was made with backing from Irish film bodies.
Released in June 1999, the film took about 4 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 6.3/10 from 30 reviews, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8/10 from 414 votes, so audiences rate it somewhat more warmly than critics do.
