The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement
Short description
Mia Thermopolis has finished college and is preparing to take up her royal duties in the small European kingdom of Genovia, with her friend Lilly along for the ride. Her plans change when she learns she is expected to become queen sooner than she thought, and that Genovian law requires a princess to marry before she can be crowned. Mia's grandmother, Queen Clarisse, stands behind her as she navigates a parade of suitors, a rival claim to the throne, and a charming young man she meets along the way. Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews return in the lead roles, joined by Héctor Elizondo, Heather Matarazzo, John Rhys-Davies and Chris Pine. Garry Marshall directs from a screenplay by Shonda Rhimes, with Whitney Houston among the producers.
The film is the fourteenth of the eighteen features Marshall directed in chronological order, arriving after Raising Helen and before Georgia Rule. Released in August 2004, it carries a 113-minute runtime and blends comedy, drama, family and romance. Made for a budget of around 40 million dollars, it took in roughly 135 million worldwide, a strong return on its cost. Audience response is modest but positive: a 5.9 rating on IMDb from about 97,000 votes, and a 6.7 on TMDB from some 3,472 votes. A film critics' score of 4.7 out of 10 from 119 reviews sits well below those audience figures, indicating that moviegoers were more receptive to it than reviewers were.
What's left behind the scenes
- Julie Andrews, who plays Queen Clarisse, loves fresh flowers. She was the one who convinced director Garry Marshall to use only natural flowers when decorating the castle. During filming, she constantly took care of them, removing wilted flowers, etc.
- Julie Andrews recorded a solo song for the film for the first time since undergoing complex throat surgery in 1997.
- At the beginning of the film, Princess Mia, played by Anne Hathaway, tells the audience what happened after the first film, saying that she and Michael broke up, and he has now left with his band on tour. Robert Schwartzman, who played Michael in Garry Marshall's 2001 film, declined to reprise the role and preferred to focus on working with his band (Rooney), and was indeed on tour during the filming of this movie.
- Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews wore genuine "Chopard" jewelry. Julie Andrews says she wore jewelry worth a million dollars for several days.
