A married American couple, Ben and Louise Dalton, and their young daughter Agnes meet a British family while on holiday abroad. When that family invites them to spend a weekend at their country estate, the Daltons accept, expecting a pleasant break in an idyllic rural setting. The hosts, Paddy and Ciara, also have a son named Ant. What starts as a friendly getaway gradually turns uncomfortable, and then threatening, as the visit takes on a disturbing character the guests did not anticipate. The story develops as a psychological thriller rather than a straightforward one.
James Watkins wrote and directed the film, a remake of a 2022 Danish film of the same name. It is his fourth feature as director, following Eden Lake, The Woman in Black and Bastille Day, and it came after a gap of several years. James McAvoy plays Paddy, with Mackenzie Davis and Scoot McNairy as the visiting couple; Aisling Franciosi plays Ciara.
Produced by Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions with Jason Blum among the producers, the film was made for about 15 million dollars and took roughly 77 million dollars worldwide, a strong return relative to its cost. On IMDb it holds a 6.8 rating from around 131,000 votes, and on TMDB a 7.1 from about 2,350 votes.
