A group of vacationers arrives at a Club Med resort on the coast of Ivory Coast, hoping to leave behind their daily worries and romantic disappointments. Over the course of a week, they throw themselves into the camp's games, competitions, outings and swimming, and into a steady stream of casual affairs. Among them are squabbling couple Bernard and Nathalie, the overconfident but inept doctor Jérôme, the uptight Christiane and the frustrated Jean-Claude, alongside the resort's activity organisers, whose own entanglements unfold with the guests'.
French Fried Vacation is a 1978 French comedy directed by Patrice Leconte, who co-wrote it with Dominique Lavanant, Gérard Jugnot and Michel Blanc. It was his first feature and the beginning of a series he returned to twice, with sequels released in 1979 and 2006. The cast brings together Thierry Lhermitte, Christian Clavier, Jugnot, Josiane Balasko, Blanc and Lavanant, several of whom also worked on the script. Produced by Yves Rousset-Rouard for Trinacra Films and CCFC, the film runs 105 minutes.
Its reputation rests on fond, long-standing affection rather than unanimous praise. On IMDb it holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 8,500 votes, and on TMDB it scores 6.6 out of 10 from roughly 965 votes, modest figures that reflect a well-liked comedy with a devoted following.
