Robinson Crusoe
Short description
Based on a novel by Daniel Defoe, this film follows an Englishman who becomes a sailor to escape his home after a violent confrontation. Following a shipwreck during a storm, he finds himself as the sole survivor on a deserted island. He struggles to survive the harsh environment and the psychological toll of isolation for several years. His situation changes when he rescues a local man from a tribe that practices human sacrifice. The two men form a deep bond that evolves from a relationship of dominance into a mutual friendship as they work together to defend themselves against the island's hostile inhabitants.
The movie was directed by Rod Hardy and George T. Miller. For Hardy, this was the first of three films he directed, followed by Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and December Boys. For Miller, it was his sixth project, following The Man from Snowy River, The Aviator, The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter, Gross Misconduct, and Andre. The cast is led by Pierce Brosnan in the title role, alongside Polly Walker, Ian Hart, James Frain, Damian Lewis, and William Takaku. Produced by Miramax, the film has received a moderate reception from viewers, holding a rating of 5.9/10 on IMDb from over 13,000 votes and a 6/10 on TMDB from 287 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was shot in 1994 and was intended to be a standard television project for the Hallmark channel. When production was already completed, Miramax studio became interested in it, bought the rights, and planned a theatrical release, hoping to make a good profit after Pierce Brosnan was announced as the new James Bond. All these plans remained unfulfilled, and the American premiere did not take place until 2001 on one of the television channels.
- The film's producers asked Pierce Brosnan to stay for a few extra days beyond the scheduled timeframe. The actor was offered a bonus to his fee, but he requested and received a new Porsche 911 Carrera sports model instead.
- Sean Brosnan, then eleven-year-old son of Pierce Brosnan and Cassandra Harris, played a small role as a ship's boy in the film.
- The day before filming began, on June 8, 1994, Pierce Brosnan was presented to the press as the new James Bond at the Regent Hotel in London. At this event, he already appeared before the public with a striking, characteristic beard reminiscent of Robinson Crusoe.
