Short description

The Ballad of Wallis Island is a comedy drama about Charles, a wealthy lottery winner who lives in solitude on a remote island. Seeking to fulfill a personal fantasy, he uses his fortune to lure his favorite musicians to his estate for a private performance. The event aims to reunite former partners Herb McGwyer and Nell Mortimer, but the gathering quickly descends into emotional conflict and chaos as old tensions resurface. Charles must then struggle to keep his dream concert from falling apart.

The film was directed by James Griffiths, following his 2014 work Cuban Fury. It was produced by Baby Cow Productions and Moxie Pictures in the United Kingdom. The cast features Tim Key as Charles, Tom Basden as Herb, and Carey Mulligan as Nell, with supporting roles played by Sian Clifford, Akemnji Ndifornyen, and Steve Marsh. The screenplay was written by Tom Basden and Tim Key.

With a runtime of 100 minutes, the production involved a credited crew of 100 people. Audience reception has been generally positive, as reflected by a rating of 7.3/10 on TMDB based on 221 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The filming period lasted only 18 days.
  • The film takes place on a remote island and was mostly shot on Ramsey Island off the coast of Pembrokeshire, Wales. Charles Heath's house (played by Tim Key) is located in the same village where the mother of the film's director, James Griffiths, was born and raised.
  • When Tom Busden's character begins to solo on the shore, an in-ear monitor can be seen in his right ear, which realistically should not have been there.
