André is an American living in Paris who has borrowed tens of thousands of euros from loan sharks across the city and has no way to repay them. With the debt collectors closing in, he decides to end his life by jumping from a bridge over the Seine, only to spot a striking young woman in a short black dress about to do the same. He dives in after her and pulls her to safety, and the woman, who calls herself Angel-A, attaches herself to him and sets about clearing his debts through a series of unexpected schemes. As she helps him settle with his creditors, he begins to wonder why she is going to such lengths for him.
Luc Besson directed and wrote the film, producing it as the eighth of the twenty features he has directed, arriving between The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc and Arthur and the Invisibles. Jamel Debbouze plays André, with Rie Rasmussen as Angel-A and supporting turns from Gilbert Melki, Serge Riaboukine, Akim Chir and Laurent Jumeaucourt. Made for a budget of around 15 million dollars, it took roughly 10 million dollars worldwide.
The film carries a 7.1 rating on IMDb from about 37,000 votes, and a 7 on TMDB from a much smaller base of 815 votes. The gap in vote counts reflects the wider reach of the former, while the two scores sit close together.
