Local Hero

A Texas oil conglomerate sends one of its executives, Mac MacIntyre, to a remote fishing village on the Scottish coast. His assignment is to buy up the entire settlement so the company can build a refinery there, and the villagers, who see a windfall, seem ready to sell. The one holdout is Ben Knox, an elderly beachcomber who owns the shoreline and wants nothing the company can offer. Mac's boss, company founder Felix Happer, also asks him to keep watch on the night sky.

David Puttnam produced, and Burt Lancaster plays Happer, with Peter Riegert as Mac, Denis Lawson as the village accountant Gordon Urquhart, Fulton Mackay as Ben Knox, Peter Capaldi as Danny Oldsen and Jennifer Black as Stella Urquhart, among 45 credited cast members. The film was made for about 4 million dollars and took roughly 6 million worldwide.
