Hard Rain
Short description
Hard Rain takes place in a small American town threatened by rising water after days of heavy rain. As the dam upstream nears breaking, residents are evacuated, but a handful of people stay behind, among them the sheriff. An armored car carrying the town's cash reserves gets stranded in the flood, and a gang of thieves moves in to take the money. Its inexperienced driver, Tom, finds himself caught between the criminals and the disaster, with the restaurateur Karen among those resisting the robbery.
Mikael Salomon directed the film, his first feature, from a screenplay by Graham Yost. Morgan Freeman plays the aging gang leader Jim, Christian Slater plays Tom, Minnie Driver plays Karen, Randy Quaid plays Sheriff Mike Collins, and Ed Asner and Betty White appear as Uncle Charlie and Doreen Sears. The production involved 121 credited crew members and was mounted on a budget of 70 million USD.
Released in January 1998, the film earned about 20 million USD worldwide, a fraction of its cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5.9 out of 10 from 830 votes. Salomon went on to direct Fallen, The Lost Future, Blue Lagoon: The Awakening and Big Driver.

- The film utilized a painted backdrop, which at the time of filming was the largest backdrop in cinematic history.
- The film was originally titled 'The Flood', but the creators changed it because they didn't want audiences to think it was simply a disaster movie.
