Extreme Measures

A patient is brought into the emergency room of a New York hospital after being found wandering the streets. Dr. Guy Luthan treats him, but the man dies, and when Luthan looks into the case he discovers that both the body and the records have disappeared. His inquiries bring him up against Dr. Lawrence Myrick, a respected senior surgeon at the hospital, and reveal a programme of private medical research that uses people as subjects. Luthan's persistence puts his job and his safety at risk as he tries to find out what is going on.

Michael Apted directed the film, the twelfth of the nineteen features listed in his filmography, following Nell and preceding The World Is Not Enough. Tony Gilroy wrote the screenplay, and Elizabeth Hurley produced. Hugh Grant plays Luthan opposite Gene Hackman as Myrick, with Sarah Jessica Parker as the nurse Jodie Trammel, alongside David Morse, Bill Nunn and Paul Guilfoyle. The production, made by Columbia Pictures, Castle Rock Entertainment and Simian Films, had a budget of 38 million US dollars and took 17 million US dollars worldwide.
