Short description

Set within the neurosurgical ward of Rigshospitalet, the primary hospital in Copenhagen, this story takes place in a location nicknamed the Kingdom. The plot follows Dr. Helmer, who turns to occult practices to protect his professional standing after a failed surgery leaves a patient braindead. Meanwhile, the hypochondriac Mrs. Drusse suffers a genuine medical emergency when she is struck by an ambulance, and a mutant fetus is born.

This production was directed by Lars von Trier and Morten Arnfred. For von Trier, this is the fifth of 17 films he directed, following Breaking the Waves and preceding The Idiots. For Arnfred, it is the second of three films directed, following The Kingdom and preceding Letters from Denmark. The screenplay was written by von Trier and Niels Vørsel, and the cast includes Ernst-Hugo Järegård, Kirsten Rolffes, Holger Juul Hansen, Søren Pilmark, Ghita Nørby, and Jens Okking. The production involved a large team with 70 credited cast members and 56 credited crew members.

The film is a multi-genre work blending comedy, drama, fantasy, horror, mystery, and thriller elements. It was a co-production between several countries, including Denmark, France, Germany, and Sweden. Audience reception has been positive, as shown by a rating of 8.2/10 on IMDb from 21,000 votes and a rating of 7.6/10 on TMDB from 66 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The dishwashers in the first season had to be dubbed because the actors could not deliver the lines exactly as the creators intended.
  • The building that Dr. Stig Helger viewed through binoculars from the hospital roof is a Swedish nuclear power plant. Due to its proximity to Copenhagen, the plant was often a source of friction between the two nations until it was closed in 2005.
  • Ernst-Hugo Järegård did not have a driver's license and drove a car only once in his life—during the filming of this series.
