Felix Ungar is a meticulous, neurotic news writer whose wife has just thrown him out. At a weekly poker game in the apartment of his friend Oscar Madison, a divorced sports journalist with a taste for disorder, Felix turns up in distress. Worried about him, Oscar invites Felix to move in. The arrangement soon proves difficult: Felix cannot stop cleaning and organising, while Oscar's mess and casual habits drive his new roommate to complain. The two men, who are opposites in nearly every way, find their friendship tested by the daily friction of sharing a home.
Gene Saks directed the film, the second title in his directing career following Barefoot in the Park the previous year, from a screenplay by Neil Simon. Jack Lemmon plays Felix and Walter Matthau plays Oscar, with John Fiedler, Herb Edelman, David Sheiner and Monica Evans in supporting roles. Howard W. Koch produced for Paramount.
Made for about 1 million dollars, the film took roughly 45 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On TMDB it holds a 7.4 rating from 677 votes.
