Orion and the Dark follows a boy named Orion, whose imagination fills his everyday life with worries, especially about the night and everything lurking in it. When a giant, friendly creature called Dark arrives, the two set off on a journey through the hours of darkness. Along the way Orion meets personifications of sleep, dreams and unexplained noises, encounters that gradually push him to face the fears that keep him awake.
The film is a DreamWorks Animation production directed by Sean Charmatz, arriving between his earlier Trolls Holiday in Harmony and the later SpongeBob SquarePants: Order Up. Charlie Kaufman wrote the screenplay, and the voice cast is led by Jacob Tremblay as Orion and Paul Walter Hauser as Dark, with Angela Bassett, Colin Hanks, Natasia Demetriou and Golda Rosheuvel among the thirty credited performers. Roughly ninety minutes long, it mixes adventure, comedy and family fantasy.
On IMDb the film holds a 6.3 rating from around 19,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.5 from roughly 700 votes. The two audience scores sit close together, suggesting a broadly moderate response rather than a sharply divided one, and the much larger IMDb sample gives that figure more weight.
