Set in a small Saskatchewan town during the 1960s, this drama follows Yvette Wong, a girl of mixed Chinese and Cree descent. Following a family tragedy, Yvette secretly explores her Indigenous heritage because her mother discourages her from embracing her Cree roots. With the support of a friend who is proud of her Mi’kmaq ancestry, Yvette learns to value her own background. After her peers discover her lineage, she must navigate social prejudice while remaining determined to pursue a career in medicine. The story is based on a play by Kenneth T. Williams and draws inspiration from real events.
The film was directed by Mohawk artist Shelley Niro, who also co-wrote the screenplay and served as a producer. The production was handled by Circle Blue Entertainment in Canada. The cast features Violah Beauvais and Star Slade in the dual role of Yvette at different ages, alongside Sera-Lys McArthur, Tom Lim, Evan Lau, and Julian Young. The movie has a runtime of 97 minutes.
