Pirates
Short description
Captain Thomas Bartholomew Red, an ageing pirate, is adrift on a raft in the open sea with his young French companion, Jean-Baptiste, known as The Frog. A Spanish galleon rescues them, but the crew is taken prisoner aboard the ship. Red learns that the vessel is carrying a golden throne belonging to an Inca chief, a prize worth a fortune, and he sets out to turn the situation to his advantage by stirring up the crew against their commanders.
The film is a high-seas adventure comedy directed by Roman Polanski, the tenth of the twenty-three features he has directed in chronological order, arriving between Tess and Frantic. He wrote the screenplay with Gérard Brach and John Brownjohn. Walter Matthau plays Captain Red, with Cris Campion as The Frog, alongside Damien Thomas, Olu Jacobs, Charlotte Lewis and Roy Kinnear. It was produced by Tarak Ben Ammar for Cannon Group and several partner companies, and shot in Poland, Tunisia and France.
Pirates was released in May 1986 and runs 124 minutes. Its budget of 40 million US dollars was considerable for the period, while its worldwide box office came to roughly 2 million dollars, a wide gap between cost and return. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 322 votes, and a film critics' rating of 4.8 out of 10 from 11 reviews, placing the critical response below the audience score.

- Director Roman Polanski began developing the project several years before filming began. He hoped to cast Jack Nicholson as Captain Red and planned to play Jean-Baptiste, nicknamed 'Frog,' himself.
- The ship featured in the film, the 'Neptune,' is currently docked in the Genoa Bay. It has been converted into a museum.
- Charlotte Lewis accused Roman Polanski of raping her during the filming of the movie. The actress was 16 years old at the time.
