Cobra Verde

Cobra Verde is a 1987 adventure drama directed by Werner Herzog, who also wrote the screenplay. Set in nineteenth-century Brazil, it follows Francisco Manoel da Silva, a man who becomes an outlaw known as Cobra Verde after killing a man in the mining region. He finds work as an overseer on a sugar plantation owned by Don Octávio Coutinho, who does not realize who his new employee is. When Cobra Verde fathers children with the owner's three daughters, he is sent away to West Africa, where he is expected to revive the slave trade with the kingdom of Dahomey.

The film stars Klaus Kinski as Cobra Verde, alongside King Ampaw, José Lewgoy, Salvatore Basile, Peter Berling and Guillermo Coronel. It was produced by Werner Herzog Filmproduktion with ZDF and the Ghana Film Industry Corporation, and shot partly in Ghana. It runs 111 minutes.

Cobra Verde was the ninth film Herzog directed, following Fitzcarraldo in 1982 and preceding My Best Fiend in 1999. It marked his last collaboration with Kinski, who died in 1991. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.9 from 18 reviews, and on TMDB it holds a rating of 6.9 from 168 votes. The two scores are closely aligned, indicating a generally comparable response from critics and audiences.
