Evil Does Not Exist

Takumi lives in Mizubiki, a small village near Tokyo, with his daughter Hana. The residents lead modest lives shaped by the natural cycles around them and rely on the local spring water. Their routine is disturbed when word spreads that a glamping site is to be built close to Takumi's home, marketed as an easy escape into nature for city dwellers. Two representatives from the Tokyo company behind the project arrive for a meeting with the villagers, who raise concerns about the camp's wastewater and the harm it could do to the water supply. The answers they receive suggest the company intends to proceed regardless.

Ryusuke Hamaguchi directed and wrote the film, following Asako I & II, Drive My Car and Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy. Hitoshi Omika plays Takumi, with Ryo Nishikawa as Hana and Ryuji Kosaka and Ayaka Shibutani as the company's two emissaries. Satoshi Takada and Satoshi Takata produced the film for Neopa and Fictive.

The film runs 106 minutes. It holds a 7/10 rating on IMDb from around 13,000 votes and a 6.8/10 on TMDB from about 321 votes, while a critics' rating of 7.9/10 from 165 reviews puts professional assessments noticeably above the audience scores on both platforms.
