Jason McCullough is on his way to Australia when he stops in a small gold-rush town and takes the vacant job of sheriff, mainly for the pay and on the understanding that he can leave if the work turns dangerous. The town has fallen under the influence of the Danby family, and McCullough's attempts to keep order, with help from an unlikely deputy, put him on a collision course with them. He also has to deal with the attentions of the mayor's daughter.
The film is a western comedy directed by Burt Kennedy, released in 1969. It was written and produced by William Bowers, and it followed several westerns Kennedy had directed during the 1960s, including The War Wagon two years earlier. James Garner plays McCullough, with Joan Hackett as Prudy Perkins, Walter Brennan as Pa Danby, Harry Morgan as Olly Perkins, Jack Elam as Jake and Henry Jones as Henry Jackson. The credited cast runs to 24 names.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 7.4 from around 14,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 from roughly 212 votes. A critics' rating of 6.8 from 15 reviews places it close to the audience scores. The vote totals indicate a film that has been widely seen and steadily regarded over the decades. It runs 92 minutes.
