Don Camillo: Monsignor

Don Camillo: Monsignor is a 1961 Italian comedy that continues the long-running rivalry between a Catholic priest and a Communist politician. By this point in the series, much has changed for the two men: Don Camillo has risen to the rank of monsignor, while Peppone has become a senator. Their careers draw them to Rome, but events bring them back to their home town near the Po, where they find themselves once again on opposite sides of a local dispute, this time over an old chapel that the authorities want to replace with a new building. Despite their opposing politics, the two remain bound by a friendship that tempers their quarrels.

The film is directed by Carmine Gallone, who had previously directed Don Camillo's Last Round in 1955, and it sits fourth in the chronological list of his features. The screenplay is by Giovanni Guareschi, creator of the characters. Fernandel and Gino Cervi return as Don Camillo and Peppone, with Leda Gloria as Peppone's wife Maria, alongside Gina Rovere, Valeria Ciangottini and Saro Urzì among a credited cast of 25.
