Short description
When the founder of a toy company dies, control of the business passes to his brother, an army general with no interest in playthings. He begins turning the factory toward the production of miniature military hardware, and his nephew Leslie, an inventor who shares his late father's love of toys, sets out to stop him. Leslie's sister Alsatia is caught between the two sides of the family. The struggle over the company's future plays out in a brightly designed world of workshops and prototypes, with comedy, drama and fantasy elements mixed together.
Barry Levinson directed and co-wrote the film with Valerie Curtin, and produced it with Mark Johnson for 20th Century Fox and Baltimore Pictures. It was Levinson's tenth film as director, arriving between Bugsy and Disclosure. Robin Williams plays Leslie, with Michael Gambon as General Zevo, Joan Cusack as Alsatia, Robin Wright as Gwen Tyler, LL Cool J as Patrick Zevo and Donald O'Connor as Kenneth Zevo.
The production had a budget of 50 million dollars and returned about 23 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.1 out of 10 from around 35,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.3 out of 10 from roughly 600 votes. A critics' rating of 4.4 out of 10 from 27 reviews places it below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- In 1992, the film was nominated for the 15th Annual Hastings Bad Film Society Awards in the “worst film” category.
- The blue car driven by Leslie is a very rare Muntz Jet. Fewer than 400 copies were produced.
- The scene where Leslie delivers a speech to the troops was improvised from beginning to end.
- It took art director Ferdinando Scarfiotto over a year to create the lavish sets for the film. The sets occupied all the soundstages at Fox Studios in Los Angeles.
- Director Barry Levinson spent over 10 years developing the film's concept. Filming took 10 months.
