Yellowbeard is an adventure comedy about a notoriously brutal pirate who has spent years raiding the Spanish Main. He is finally caught, though not for his crimes at sea: he is convicted of tax evasion and sentenced to twenty years in a prison for the extremely naughty. The Royal Navy, hoping to get its hands on his hidden treasure, arranges for him to escape and then tracks him, while his grown son sets out on his own search for the gold. Fellow pirates, government agents and others with an interest in the fortune complicate the hunt.
The film was directed by Mel Damski and released in 1983, the first of the features he directed listed in chronological order. It was written by Graham Chapman, Peter Cook and Bernard McKenna, with Carter DeHaven producing. Chapman stars as Captain Yellowbeard, and the cast includes Martin Hewitt, Eric Idle, Peter Cook, Michael Hordern and Peter Boyle among thirty-seven credited performers.
Made on a budget of about ten million dollars, Yellowbeard took in roughly four million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 from around 9,300 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 5.6 from about 162 votes. A critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from nine reviews sits close to those audience scores.
