Nothing to Lose

Nick Beam, a successful advertising executive, comes home early one evening and finds his wife in bed with his boss. Shattered, he drives off with no destination and ends up in a rough part of Los Angeles. There a small-time armed robber named T. Paul jumps into his car, expecting an easy target. Instead, Nick locks the doors and speeds away with the would-be thief trapped inside, and the two men, both at a low point, gradually move from hostage and captor toward an unlikely partnership built around a robbery and a plan for payback. Their scheme draws the attention of other criminals who resent the intrusion.

Steve Oedekerk directed and wrote the film, his second feature after Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls and one he made before Kung Pow: Enter the Fist and Barnyard. Tim Robbins plays Nick and Martin Lawrence plays T. Paul, with John C. McGinley, Giancarlo Esposito, Kelly Preston and Michael McKean in supporting roles. The production, from Touchstone Pictures and O Entertainment, was made for about 25 million dollars and returned roughly 44 million worldwide.

On IMDb the film holds 6.7 out of 10 from around 52,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.6 out of 10 from a much smaller sample of 753. A critics' rating of 5.3 out of 10 from 25 reviews places professional notices below the audience scores. The gap suggests viewers have been more receptive to the comedy than reviewers were.
