The Miser
Short description
Based on a play by Molière, this comedy follows Harpagon, a wealthy man whose extreme stinginess affects everyone around him. He guards a hidden chest of gold coins in his garden while forcing his servants and children to live in poverty. Conflict arises when Harpagon attempts to arrange marriages for his daughter, Elise, and son, Cléante, based on financial gain rather than affection. While he seeks partners who require no dowry or possess great wealth, his children have already fallen in love with others, leading them to oppose their father's plans.
The film was co-directed and co-written by Louis de Funès and Jean Girault. For de Funès, this was the tenth of 13 directed films, following The Gendarme and the Creatures from Outer Space and preceding The Cabbage Soup.
