Short description
A group of formerly criminal animals struggles to gain public trust and acceptance while trying to live as good citizens. Their efforts to stay reformed are interrupted when they are drawn into a large-scale, international heist. This new conflict is orchestrated by an unexpected team of female criminals known as the Bad Girls, who force the protagonists back into a life of crime for one final mission.
This animated action comedy was directed by Pierre Perifel, following his work on The Building and the first installment of this series. The voice cast features Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Awkwafina, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, and Zazie Beetz. Produced by DreamWorks Animation in collaboration with dentsu and Scholastic Entertainment, the film was a joint production between the United States and Japan.
With a budget of 80 million USD, the film earned 240 million USD at the worldwide box office, indicating a profitable theatrical run. What's left behind the scenes
- Work on the film began in February 2023. Its release was initially planned for the spring of 2025, but plans soon changed, and production was accelerated to release it before the premiere of the animated movie "Zootopia 2".
- Craig Robinson (who voiced Shark) plays the piano; he utilized his skills in the scene where Shark dressed up as a priest at a wedding.
- While preparing for filming, Danielle Brooks rewatched Quentin Tarantino's war comedy "Inglourious Basterds" (2009).
- It was originally intended that the character voiced by Zazie Beetz would have a more significant role in the script, while the character voiced by Danielle Brooks was meant to be her former friend. Allegedly, these two characters had a falling out in the past and were intended to reconcile toward the end of the film.
- At one point, it was planned that the character voiced by Richard Ayoade would be more heavily involved in the criminals' hijacking of the experimental rocket, meaning he would join them for the final battle in space.
