Caboblanco is set in a Peruvian coastal town shortly after the Second World War, where American expatriate Giff Hoyt runs a bar and keeps to himself. His routine is disturbed by the arrival of Marie-Claire Allesandri, a Frenchwoman searching for a man who has disappeared. Her inquiry draws her into the same pursuit that occupies Gunther Beckdorff, a German living in a guarded hillside villa, and Lewis Clarkson, who presents himself as a British geographer. All of them are chasing a German treasure that went down with a ship offshore. When a marine researcher is killed and the corrupt local police captain dismisses the death as an accident, Hoyt begins to suspect Beckdorff, and the town's uneasy mix of fugitives and opportunists closes in around him.
J. Lee Thompson directed the film, the thirteenth of the twenty-one features listed in his filmography, following The White Buffalo and preceding Happy Birthday to Me. Morton S. Fine and Milton S. Gelman wrote the screenplay, and Paul Joseph and Lance Hool produced. Charles Bronson plays Hoyt, with Jason Robards as Beckdorff, Dominique Sanda as Marie-Claire, Fernando Rey as Captain Torredo, Simon MacCorkindale as Clarkson and Camilla Sparv as Hera, among a credited cast of twenty-four. Made on a budget of ten million dollars, the film holds a rating of 5.3 on IMDb from roughly 1,500 votes and the same score on TMDB from about 40 votes.
