Set in 1950s Princeton, I.Q. centres on Ed Walters, a car mechanic who falls for Catherine Boyd, an intelligent young woman already engaged to a psychologist. Catherine happens to be the niece of Albert Einstein, who takes a liking to Ed and would rather see her with him than with her dull fiancé. With help from his fellow scientists, Einstein sets out to pass the unassuming mechanic off as a brilliant physicist so that Catherine will take notice of him. The deception grows harder to maintain as it gains attention.
Fred Schepisi directed the film, working from a screenplay by Michael J. Leeson and Andy Breckman. It follows Six Degrees of Separation in the run of nine features Schepisi had directed to that point. Tim Robbins and Meg Ryan play the couple at the centre, while Walter Matthau takes the role of Einstein, supported by Lou Jacobi, Gene Saks and Joseph Maher among a credited cast of 34. Produced by Paramount and Sandollar Productions, the film cost about 25 million USD and returned roughly 26 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.2/10 from 28,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6/10 from 508 votes. A critics' rating of 5.3/10 from 28 reviews places it below both audience scores.
