What's left behind the scenes

  • Some of the actors involved in the film actually studied together at Cambridge. Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson, and Hugh Laurie were even in the university's drama society.
  • The melody that Roger taps on the coffee cup was composed by Hugh Laurie.
  • Filming took only 10 days.
  • The entire opening scene, including the dance and backstage jokes, was filmed in a single four-minute take.
  • Sarah Johnson, played by Alphonsine Emmanuel, is preparing for a production of Anton Chekhov's (1860-1904) play "The Cherry Orchard" (1903).
  • The film is informally known as The British Big Chill.
  • Peter, played by Stephen Fry, has an Apple Macintosh computer but no television. Fry was actually the second person in the UK to buy a Macintosh computer. The first buyer (he took two at once) was writer Douglas Adams (1952-2001).
  • Sarah Johnson, played by Alfonsia Emmanuel, is preparing for a production of Anton Chekhov's (1860-1904) play "The Cherry Orchard" (1903).
