Volunteer home-care worker Rika is assigned to visit a family, she is cursed and chased by two revengeful fiends: Kayako, a woman brutally murdered by her husband and her son Toshio. Each person that lives in or visits the haunted house is murdered or disappears.

Yūya Ozeki is afraid of cats, so filming his character with a beloved cat named Mar was very difficult.
Two versions of the film—R-rated and PG-13—were presented for test screenings. After brief deliberation, it was decided to release the less intense version, from which the most gruesome shots were removed.
Takako Fuji practiced ballet and acrobatics, so all the seemingly impossible bends and jerky movements of her character she performed herself; no computer graphics were used.
The attic of the sinister house was a separate structure. This provided the film crew with more room to maneuver within the house itself.
Despite the language barrier, Sarah Michelle Gellar became seriously interested in studying Japanese culture.
The full version of the film has a runtime of 97 minutes.
