Iris

Iris tells the story of the long marriage between the British novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch and John Bayley, a literature scholar. The two meet at Oxford, where the outgoing Iris and the shy Bayley begin a relationship that lasts for decades. Their life together unfolds alongside Iris's writing career, and the film moves between their youth and their later years, when her memory and speech begin to fail and Bayley takes on her care.

Richard Eyre directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Charles Wood, adapting Bayley's memoirs. It was Eyre's first feature film, followed by Stage Beauty, Notes on a Scandal and later work. Kate Winslet plays the young Iris and Judi Dench plays her in old age, with Jim Broadbent as the older Bayley and Hugh Bonneville as his younger self. The cast also includes Penelope Wilton and Samuel West.

Made for about 6 million dollars, the film took roughly 16 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 7 out of 10 from around 20,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 from a few hundred. The critics' rating of 7.4 from 112 reviews places it above the audience scores, though the IMDb figure reflects a far larger body of voters.
