National Theatre Live: Vanya

National Theatre Live: Vanya captures a stage production in which Andrew Scott performs every role in Anton Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, a play about a household thrown into discontent when a retired professor and his young second wife return to the rural estate that has supported them. The hopes, ambitions and disappointments of the people living there come into conflict as long-standing resentments surface. Scott plays figures including Ivan, Sonya, Michael, Helena, Alexander, Maureen, Liam and Elizabeth, so the encounters between them are handled by a single performer.

The film was directed by Sam Yates and released in February 2024, running 115 minutes. It sits between his earlier television work Agatha and the Curse of Ishtar and the features Magpie and National Theatre Live: Golden Boy, and was produced by the National Theatre, which recorded the West End staging for cinema audiences. Andrew Scott, already a well-known stage and screen actor, is the production's sole cast member.

The recording drew a worldwide box office of about 3 million dollars. On IMDb it holds 8.5 out of 10 from roughly 1,300 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.2 out of 10 from a much smaller group of 11 voters. The larger IMDb sample points to strong approval for the performance and the staging.
