The Company of Wolves

The Company of Wolves is a British fantasy horror film set around a young girl named Rosaleen whose dreams blur with the stories her grandmother tells her in a village on the edge of a dark forest. Those tales warn of wolves and of strangers marked by eyebrows that meet above the nose, and as Rosaleen moves toward adulthood, the line between the stories and her own life grows harder to hold. The film draws on Angela Carter's reworking of fairy-tale material, with Carter and director Neil Jordan writing the screenplay.

Jordan directed the film, his first of 15 features in chronological order, followed by Mona Lisa in 1986. Sarah Patterson plays Rosaleen, with Angela Lansbury as Granny and David Warner as her father; the credited cast runs to 23 names and the crew to 67. The film was produced by Stephen Woolley and Chris Brown for a group of companies including Palace Pictures, Film4 Productions, the Cannon Group and ITC Entertainment, on a budget of about 2 million dollars.

Released in September 1984 and running 95 minutes, the film took roughly 4 million dollars worldwide, about twice what it cost to make. On TMDB it holds a 6.3 rating from 402 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.8 from 21 reviews, so reviewers rated it somewhat higher than the wider public did.
