V/H/S/Beyond
Short description
V/H/S/Beyond is an anthology horror film built around a collection of found-footage segments, framed by a mysterious videotape that draws an obsessed collector toward a series of disturbing recordings. Each tape documents a different encounter with the unknown, ranging from UFO investigators recounting a man's disappearance and the two cassettes he left behind, to a squad of monster hunters raiding a kidnapper's home, paparazzi trailing a new Bollywood star, a skydiving group caught in an alien invasion, activists infiltrating a suspicious dog boarding house, and a woman gathering accounts of strange lights over the desert. The film leans into science fiction as much as horror, using extraterrestrial threats and otherworldly creatures as its subject matter.
The segments were directed by Jordan Downey, Christian Long, Justin Long, Kate Siegel, Virat Pal, Justin Martinez and Jay Cheel, with a screenplay by Mike Flanagan, Christian Long and Justin Long. For Downey it followed The Head Hunter and preceded The Cycle; Siegel's segment was her directorial debut, ahead of The Boulet Brothers' Holiday of Horrors; Martinez had previously worked on V/H/S and Southbound. The large credited cast includes performers appearing as themselves in the framing material.
Released on 20 September 2024 and running 114 minutes, the film drew a 7/10 critics' rating from 61 reviews, higher than its audience scores of 5.8/10 on IMDb from around 12,000 votes and 6.6/10 on TMDB from roughly 324 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Kate Siegel was initially supposed to direct a segment based on her own script. She initially wanted it to be a musical, but the producers shut down that idea. Then she proposed a comedic horror film featuring puppets and said she was ready to arrange collaboration between the project's authors and Brian Henson from Jim Henson's Creature Workshop. That idea was also rejected. Then, in desperation, Siegel turned to her husband, Mike Flanagan, and he wrote a script based on his conversation with Siegel about her favorite films and what specifically attracted her to them. The producers liked this idea.
- At the beginning of the "Stork" segment, it can be noticed that one of the video cassettes on the shelves is labeled "Raatma." This is a reference to a special application, as well as the W.A.R.D.E.N. police unit from the franchise's universe.
- Jordan Downey's "Stork" segment features a polyptych of the same name by computer artist Oleg Vdovenko.
