Short description

Hogfather takes place on the Discworld, where the year-end festival of Hogswatch is approaching. The cheerful figure who brings presents to children has disappeared, and with him gone the whole mythical order that underpins the world is at risk. Death steps in to keep the night running, while his granddaughter Susan, a governess, and a group of wizards led by Mustrum Ridcully try to find out what happened. Their search brings them up against a conspiracy involving the assassins' guild.

The film was directed by Vadim Jean, who wrote the screenplay with Terry Pratchett, adapting Pratchett's Discworld novel. It is a British television production from The Mob and RHI Entertainment, made for around nine million dollars and running just over three hours. The cast includes David Jason as Albert, Marc Warren as Teatime, Michelle Dockery as Susan, David Warner as Lord Downey, Tony Robinson as Vernon Crumley and Nigel Planer as Mr. Sideney.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7.4 from roughly 12,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.8 from a much smaller number of votes. The wider and steadier support on IMDb, alongside the modest TMDB sample, suggests a well-liked adaptation with a dedicated following rather than broad consensus.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The inscription on the back of the dean's robe is a reference to Terry Pratchett's (1948-2015) novel "Reaper Man" (1994) from the Discworld series, which also features Death with assistants.
  • After filming a cameo role, Terry Pratchett was stopped at customs at an Australian airport. He had a large box of plastic teeth with him, which he had taken from the set. Pratchett explained the situation to the customs officers and advised them to start worrying when they came across a box labeled 'Death'.
  • Writer Terry Pratchett appeared at the end of the film as a toy maker visited by Death.
