The Tattoo
Short description
An art dealer discovers that a former soldier has a valuable Modigliani painting tattooed on his back. Driven by greed, the dealer attempts to acquire the artwork, but the soldier refuses his initial offers. Eventually, the two reach an agreement where the dealer promises to renovate the soldier's country home in exchange for the piece. This leads the contrasting personalities on a journey across France as the dealer realizes the restoration of the dilapidated property will be far more expensive than expected.
This 1968 comedy was a joint production between France and Italy, produced by Les Films Corona, Les Films Copernic, and Ascot Cineraid. It was directed by Denys de La Patellière, who also directed Prêtres interdits in 1973. The film features a main cast including Louis de Funès as Félicien Mézeray and Jean Gabin as the soldier, known as Legrain or Comte Enguerand de Montignac, alongside Dominique Davray, Paul Mercey, Yves Barsacq, and Henri Virlogeux. - Despite appearing together in several wonderful films, Jean Gabin and Louis de Funès hated each other in real life. Jean Gabin envied Louis de Funès's fame, considered him an upstart, and couldn't stand the fact that producers always listened to the famous comedian. De Funès, in turn, constantly improvised and changed the script to his liking while filming, which also infuriated Gabin. De Funès couldn't tolerate Gabin's arrogance and his fear of deviating even a step from the written script.
- Louis de Funès and Jean Gabin met in this film for the third and final time in their careers. They first starred together in Claude Autant-Lara's film 'Through Paris' in 1956, followed by the 1962 comedy 'A Gentleman from Epsom'.
