Dolores Claiborne
Short description
Dolores Claiborne has spent most of her life working as a housekeeper for Vera Donovan, the wealthy woman who owns the home on a small island where Dolores has lived. When Vera dies, Dolores is accused of her murder, and the local detective John Mackey has long believed she also killed her husband Joe in what was ruled an accidental death years earlier. Dolores's estranged daughter Selena, a magazine writer in New York, returns to the island as the case against her mother builds, and the two women are forced to confront the painful history they have avoided for years. The film is based on Stephen King's novel of the same name.
Taylor Hackford directed the film, his sixth feature, following Bound by Honor and arriving two years before The Devil's Advocate. Tony Gilroy wrote the screenplay, and Charles Mulvehill and Hackford produced it. Kathy Bates leads as Dolores, with Jennifer Jason Leigh as Selena, Judy Parfitt as Vera Donovan, Christopher Plummer as John Mackey, David Strathairn as Joe St. George and Eric Bogosian as Peter. It runs 132 minutes.
Made for 13 million dollars, the film took in about 24 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds 7.4 out of 10 from 53,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.3 from 905 votes. A critics' score of 6.9 from 51 reviews sits close to those audience figures, suggesting broadly similar reception across both groups.
