Short description
In Her Shoes centres on two sisters living in Philadelphia who share little beyond their shoe size. Maggie is a free-spirited young woman with no job and a taste for parties and clothes; Rose is a hard-working lawyer at a prestigious firm whose life revolves around her career. Their uneasy arrangement collapses after Maggie sleeps with Rose's boyfriend, and Rose throws her out. With nowhere left to go, Maggie makes contact with a grandmother the sisters never knew existed, and her arrival forces both women to confront uncomfortable truths about themselves and their family.
Curtis Hanson directed the film, the tenth of the thirteen he directed, following 8 Mile and preceding Lucky You. Susannah Grant wrote the screenplay, and Hanson produced with Carol Fenelon and Ridley Scott. Cameron Diaz plays Maggie and Toni Collette plays Rose, with Shirley MacLaine as the grandmother, Ella Hirsh, alongside Mark Feuerstein, Ken Howard and Candice Azzara in supporting roles. The large credited cast runs to 87 names.
Released in October 2005, the film is a comedy-drama with romantic elements running 130 minutes, made by British and American production companies including Scott Free Productions and Fox 2000 Pictures. It took about 83 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from more than 64,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 out of 10 from over 1,300 votes, while a critics' score of 6.8 out of 10 from 162 reviews places it a little above the audience ratings.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director Curtis Hanson personally met with Toni Collette before filming began and asked her to gain weight for the role. The actress successfully gained about ten kilograms, and then lost it during filming, which also mirrored what was happening to her character.
- The author of the book the film is based on, Jennifer Weiner, and her literary agent appear on screen in one scene, walking past Toni Collette’s character and her friend at the Italian market. The writer's sister and grandmother also appear in the film.
- The woman depicted in the photograph as Rose and Maggie's mother is the well-known model, Ivan Milicevic.
- Although Toni Collette plays the older sister of Cameron Diaz's character, in reality, Cameron Diaz is two months older than her.
- A special animated insert was developed for the opening credits a year before the premiere, but at the last moment, the producers decided to abandon its use, deciding that with such a beginning, viewers might consider the film too unserious.
