Short description
Nate is a reserved man living in San Diego who possesses a rare medical condition that prevents him from feeling physical pain. After a group of robbers disguised as Santa Claus attack his workplace and kidnap Sherry, a woman he has grown fond of, Nate decides to rescue her. While pursuing the criminals, he discovers that his inability to feel pain is a significant advantage in combat, though he also faces suspicion from police officers who mistake him for an accomplice.
Directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, this action comedy thriller is the fourth collaboration between the two filmmakers, following The Stakelander, Villains, and Significant Other. The film stars Jack Quaid as Nate and Amber Midthunder as Sherry, with a supporting cast that includes Ray Nicholson, Betty Gabriel, Matt Walsh, and Jacob Batalon.
Produced by Paramount and three other companies, the movie had a budget of 18 million USD and earned 35 million USD at the worldwide box office. It received generally positive feedback from viewers, holding a 6.5 rating on IMDb from 86,000 votes and a 6.8 rating on TMDB from 1,771 votes. These audience scores are slightly higher than the film critics' rating of 6.4 based on 221 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- If all the blows dealt to the protagonist had landed on his head instead of his body, his face would have become unrecognizable by the middle of the film.
- According to Jack Quaid, who played Nathan, the film was shot sequentially, following the script more closely than is usually done. Using three-dimensional scanning and computer technology, special effects artists created a bust of the actor on which they experimented with images of wounds and tattoos. Quaid enjoyed the whole process very much.
- Directors Dan Berk and Robert Olsen considered Jack Quaid perfectly suited for the role of Nathan. They had seen his work in the series "The Boys" (2019-), and the actor's charm reminded them of Tom Hanks. Quaid had to learn not to react externally to blows to the face, and stuntman Stanimir Stamatov helped him with this.
