Into the Blue

Into the Blue follows a group of young divers in the Bahamas whose luck appears to change when they find the wreck of what seems to be a treasure-laden ship. Jared works as a diving instructor, and his girlfriend Sam cares for sharks at a hotel aquarium. When Jared's wealthy childhood friend Bryce arrives with his girlfriend Amanda, the four spend their days on and under the water. During one dive they come across the shipwreck, but close by lies a second wreck: a downed plane packed with illegal cargo. The friends agree to keep both discoveries to themselves, a pact that soon puts them at odds with the people searching for the plane.

John Stockwell directed the film, which sits between Blue Crush and Turistas in his filmography. Matt Johnson wrote the screenplay, and David Zelon produced. Paul Walker and Jessica Alba lead the cast as Jared and Sam, with Scott Caan, Ashley Scott, Josh Brolin and James Frain in supporting roles.

Released in September 2005, the film had a budget of 50 million US dollars and took about 46 million worldwide, so it did not recoup its costs at the box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.9 from around 84,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 5.9, from roughly 1,700 votes. A critics' rating of 4.4 from 123 reviews places it below both audience scores.
