Short description

Legend is a fantasy adventure set in a magical forest world of fairies, goblins, unicorns and mortals. The Lord of Darkness schemes to bring about an age of eternal night and ice by destroying the unicorns, whose light holds the darkness back. When the princess Lili is drawn into his plans and taken captive, Jack, a young man of the forest, sets out with a band of companions to rescue her and stop the lord before the world falls under his rule.

Ridley Scott directed the film, the fourth of the thirty-four features he has made, following Blade Runner in 1982 and preceding Someone to Watch Over Me in 1987. William Hjortsberg wrote the screenplay, Arnon Milchan produced, and the cast includes Tom Cruise as Jack, Mia Sara as Princess Lili, Tim Curry as the Lord of Darkness, David Bennent as Honeythorn Gump, Alice Playten as Blix and Billy Barty as Screwball. Twenty-four cast members and 187 crew are credited across a production that cost about 25 million dollars and returned roughly 16 million worldwide.

Its two versions, one with a Tangerine Dream score and one with Jerry Goldsmith's, have circulated since. On IMDb, the film holds 5.1 out of 10 from 45 critics' reviews, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3 out of 10 from 1,445 votes, a modest audience rating that places it above the critics' average.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The director's cut has a runtime of 114 minutes.
  • Filming was halted when soundstage 007, built for the James Bond films, burned to the ground. The final scenes had to be completed later on hastily constructed sets.
  • A brand in the shape of an 'S' is clearly visible on one of the unicorns' thighs. This is the marking of a Spanish ranch from which the horses were brought.
