Scheherazade's New Tales is a fantasy adventure following the stories told by Scheherazade to her ruler. One narrative focuses on Maruf, a shoemaker who is cast out of his city through a plot orchestrated by his spiteful wife and her lover. After being exiled, Maruf is transported across the sea by a genie to a distant land. In this new location, he encounters further dangers, including strict laws that forbid any man from seeing the face of Princess Esmagül while she travels through the city.
Produced in the Soviet Union by Tajikfilm and Ganemfilm, the movie was released on August 10, 1987. It was directed by Takhir Sabirov, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Valeriy Karen. This production follows Sabirov's earlier 1960 film, Time to Get Married. The cast features Yelena Tonunts as Scheherazade and Takhir Sabirov as Caliph Shahryar, with Ulugbek Muzaffarov playing the role of Maruf. Other roles include Gennadi Chetverikov as the genie, Tamara Yandiyeva as Princess Esmagül, and Burkhon Radzhabov as Merchant Ali. The film has a total runtime of 134 minutes and blends elements of romance and family drama.
