The Prophecy
Short description
The archangel Gabriel descends to Earth in search of a soul that could decide a stalemate in a war among the angels. A former priest, now a homicide detective named Thomas Daggett, and a schoolteacher, Katherine Henley, become caught up in the conflict when that soul is hidden inside a Native American girl. Gabriel's plan brings him into conflict with both Thomas and the angel Simon, while the fate of the child hangs in the balance.
The Prophecy was released in 1995 and runs 98 minutes. It was written and directed by Gregory Widen, produced by Joel Soisson, and made by Dimension Films, Overseas FilmGroup, NEO Motion Pictures and First Look International. Christopher Walken plays Gabriel, with Elias Koteas as Thomas Daggett, Virginia Madsen as Katherine Henley, Eric Stoltz as Simon, Viggo Mortensen as Lucifer and Amanda Plummer as Rachael among a credited cast of twenty. The film blends action, drama, fantasy, horror and thriller elements.
Made for about 8 million dollars, the film took in roughly 16 million worldwide, a modest return. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from more than 32,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 from a much smaller sample, indicating a durable if unspectacular following. A critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 24 reviews places it somewhat below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film was shot in 1993, but was not released until 1995. The Weinstein brothers, founders of the Miramax distribution company that handled the film's distribution, typically took a year or two break after filming, during which time the films were edited and re-edited.
- When the Archangel Gabriel, played by Christopher Walken, first meets Jerry, the camera shows Jerry's house. For a moment, a photograph of Jerry, played by Adam Goldberg, with a girlfriend flashes on the screen. Neither the girlfriend nor even her name is mentioned anywhere in the film. In fact, Michelle Spadaro, the film's set decorator, starred alongside Jerry.
