Vive L'Amour follows three young people in Taipei who each find their own way into the same empty apartment. May works in real estate and uses the place for her encounters; Ah-jung is one of her lovers; and Hsiao-kang, who works in the funeral trade, takes a key and turns the apartment into a private refuge. None of them knows about the others at first, and the film traces what happens as their separate visits begin to overlap.
Tsai Ming-liang directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Yi-chun Tsai and Pi-ying Yang. It was his second film, following Rebels of the Neon God the same year and preceding The Hole in 1998, part of a career that now numbers thirteen features. Lee Kang-sheng plays Hsiao-kang, with Yang Kuei-Mei as May and Chen Chao-jung as Ah-jung. The production was handled by Taiwan's Central Motion Picture Corporation.
The film runs just under two hours and sits within the drama genre, a portrait of urban solitude in contemporary Taiwan. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.4 from roughly 5,500 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 7.2 from about 162 votes, a consistently solid reception across both audiences.
