Stray Bodies

Stray Bodies is a documentary that explores the phenomenon of medical tourism within Europe. The film follows individuals who travel across borders to access healthcare procedures that are illegal or restricted in their home countries. The narrative focuses on the personal struggles of people seeking abortions, IVF treatments, and euthanasia as they navigate different legal systems and moral norms to exercise their basic human rights.

The film was directed and written by Elina Psykou, following her previous works The Eternal Return of Antonis Paraskevas from 2013 and Son of Sofia from 2017. This project was a collaborative production involving companies from Bulgaria, Greece, Italy, and Switzerland, including EPT and SRG SSR. The production team included producers Ivan Madeo, Veselka Kiryakova, and Marco Visalberghi. With a runtime of 109 minutes, the documentary provides a factual look at the existential questions surrounding life and death through the experiences of those forced to travel for medical care.
