Emily longs to see her daughter, Heather, who is studying in Boston. To avoid her mother's strict holiday traditions, Heather pretends to be studying on campus while actually planning a trip to Phoenix with her boyfriend. This plan leads to a series of misunderstandings: Emily travels to Boston to surprise her daughter, while Emily's friend Faith discovers Charles living in Emily's home. Meanwhile, in Boston, Charles' brother Ray finds Emily in his sibling's condo after responding to an emergency call.
