Exhibiting Forgiveness

Exhibiting Forgiveness follows Tarrell, a Black artist whose career is gaining momentum when his estranged father, La'Ron, reappears after years apart. A recovering addict, La'Ron wants to reconcile, and his arrival unsettles the life Tarrell has built. Tarrell turns to his paintings to work through his past, while his wife Aisha and his mother Joyce are drawn into the difficult reckoning between father and son. The film centers on the distance between forgiving someone and being able to forget what happened.

The drama marks the narrative feature debut of director and screenwriter Titus Kaphar, an artist himself, who wrote the screenplay and made the film with producers Jamie Patricof, Stephanie Allain and Derek Cianfrance. André Holland leads as Tarrell, with Andra Day as Aisha, John Earl Jelks as La'Ron, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor as Joyce and Ian Foreman as the younger Tarrell.

Released in September 2024, the film runs 117 minutes. Its critical reception stands apart from its audience scores: on IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 1,700 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9 out of 10 from a much smaller group of 31 votes. The critics' rating of 8.1 out of 10 from 77 reviews places it notably higher than the general audience response recorded on TMDB.
