Short description
Three successful friends share a stylish New York apartment and a carefree bachelor life. Their routine is upended when a baby is left at their door, with a note asking that the infant be looked after while Jack, one of the roommates, is away. Peter and Michael know nothing about infant care and must improvise diapers, bottles and sleepless nights, while a delivery meant for Jack brings a second, more dangerous complication. The story is a comedy about how three unprepared men take on a responsibility none of them wanted.
Leonard Nimoy directed the film, which followed his two Star Trek features and preceded Holy Matrimony in his filmography. James Orr and Jim Cruickshank wrote the screenplay, and Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg and Ted Danson play the three friends, with Margaret Colin, Celeste Holm and Nancy Travis also in the cast.
Made for a modest budget, the film turned into a major commercial success, taking in far more at the worldwide box office than it cost to produce. Its ratings are noticeably mixed: on IMDb it holds a 6.1 out of 10 from roughly 61,000 votes, on TMDB a 6.2 from about 1,100 votes, and a critics' rating of 5.9 from 70 reviews places professional opinion in much the same range as the audience response.
What's left behind the scenes
- Director Leonard Nimoy (1931-2015) reviewed video footage of approximately two thousand twins vying for the role of Mary before choosing Lisa and Michelle Blair. Before settling on them, he personally met with four pairs of twins.
- Towards the end of filming, the babies playing Mary had grown accustomed to the unfamiliar actor 'uncles' and shifted their attention to the microphone. They began to follow the microphone with their eyes, rather than the actors. The crew had to resort to various tricks to hide the microphone from the babies’ view.
- When a call for 100 extras for a party scene in the hero's house was announced for Tom Selleck, over 5,000 applicants expressed their interest, hoping to either land a role as an extra or at least catch a glimpse of Selleck or another actor. 4,900 women who were not selected as extras never saw Selleck or anyone else, as the actors were on a different set at that time. The chosen hundred women had to 'mingle' at the party with Selleck for four days while the scene was being filmed.
- During the two-week rehearsal period before filming began, then-single Tom Selleck and Steve Guttenberg took married Ted Danson with them on a spree. The idea was to visit several nightclubs, bars, and restaurants in Toronto to get better acquainted with the roles of bachelors they were to play. Wherever they went during this spree, they caused a sensation.
- The Pampers company paid $50,000 for product placement of their diapers.
