Short description
Peter Weir wrote, produced and directed this romantic comedy-drama about two strangers who enter a marriage of convenience. Brontë Mitchell, a horticulturist in New York, has her sights set on an apartment that the building's board will rent only to a couple. Georges Fauré, a French waiter whose right to stay in the United States is running out, needs an American spouse. A mutual friend brings them together, and they agree to marry so that each gets what the other cannot provide alone. Their arrangement comes under scrutiny from immigration authorities, forcing them to live as husband and wife and to learn the details of each other's lives, despite being opposites who initially get on each other's nerves.
Gérard Depardieu plays Georges opposite Andie MacDowell as Brontë, with supporting turns from Bebe Neuwirth, Gregg Edelman, Robert Prosky and Jessie Keosian. The film was a co-production between Australia, the United States and France, made for a budget of 13 million dollars, and it took about 30 million dollars worldwide. Weir's ninth feature in a career of thirteen films, it followed Dead Poets Society and preceded Fearless. Ratings sit in the middle range: on IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 27,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.1 from around 550 votes.
