500 Days in the Wild is a Canadian documentary about a filmmaker who has grown disillusioned with the state of the world and sets out alone on the longest hiking trail on earth. Recording the journey herself as she goes, she turns the camera on both the landscape she crosses and her own experience of travelling it, making the trip itself the subject of the film.
Dianne Whelan directs and appears as herself, the only credited cast member, and the film was produced through Elevation Pictures and Rebel Sister Productions. It runs 120 minutes. The approach places the director at the centre of the work rather than behind it, with the solo, self-filmed format shaping how the story is told.
The documentary was released on 1 March 2024, arriving after Whelan had already built a career of her own; this is her fourth film as director.
