Horton Hears a Who!
Short description
Horton is an elephant with an unusually sharp sense of hearing, and one day he picks up a faint call for help drifting through the jungle air. The sound comes from a speck of dust, which turns out to hold a whole tiny community. Convinced that the smallest lives matter, Horton sets out to protect the speck and its inhabitants. The other animals, led by a wary kangaroo, decide he has lost his mind and want the speck destroyed, so Horton has to defend it while proving that its people really exist.
The film is an animated adaptation of Dr. Seuss's story, directed by Jimmy Hayward and Steve Martino. It was the first feature either of them directed, and both went on to further animated work. The voice cast includes Jim Carrey as Horton, Steve Carell as the Mayor of the speck's town, Carol Burnett as the Kangaroo, Will Arnett as Vlad, Seth Rogen as Horton's friend Morton, and Dan Fogler. It runs 86 minutes.
Released in March 2008, the film had a budget of 85 million USD and took in about 299 million USD worldwide, a strong return on its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.8/10 from roughly 158,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5/10 from a much smaller base of about 3,600 votes, showing generally favorable audience reactions.
What's left behind the scenes
- "Horton" is the second film starring Jim Carrey based on the stories of Dr. Seuss. The first was "How the Grinch Stole Christmas".
- Some of the trees seen in the cartoon are reminiscent of the Truffula Trees from another story by Dr. Seuss, "The Lorax".
- In one scene, the Kangaroo child mentions his imaginary friend named “Thidwick.” This is a reference to another story by Dr. Seuss – “Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose.”
