Short description

Mario and Luigi travel through space to stop Bowser Jr. from implementing a plan for world domination. Along with Princess Peach and Toad, the brothers visit various planets and meet new allies, including Yoshi and Rosalina, while attempting to thwart the young heir's efforts to rescue his father from captivity.

This animated adventure was produced by Universal Pictures, Illumination, and Nintendo. It was directed by Michael Jelenic and Aaron Horvath, following their collaboration on The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. For Horvath, this follows Teen Titans Go! To the Movies from 2018. The screenplay was written by Matthew Fogel and produced by Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto. The voice cast features Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Benny Safdie.

With a budget of 110 million USD, the film was a significant commercial success, earning 1.01 billion USD at the worldwide box office. The audience reception is generally positive, though it varies between platforms. It holds a rating of 6.5/10 on IMDb based on 17,439 votes and a higher rating of 8.2/10 on TMDB from 3,709 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Glenn Powell asked the animation studio's management to let him voice Fox McCloud because he had always really liked this anthropomorphic fox.
  • The giant dragon created by Bowser Jr. toward the end of the film is the dragon from the 2017 video game Super Mario Odyssey.
  • The entire scene with the dinosaur is a direct copy of the Tyrannosaurus's death scene from Don Bluth's animated film The Land Before Time (1988).
  • The weapon Bowser and Bowser Jr. use to turn Mario and Luigi into babies is based on the Super Scope 6, a weapon found in several Super Nintendo games.
