Glenn Powell asked the animation studio's management to let him voice Fox McCloud because he had always really liked this anthropomorphic fox.
The giant dragon created by Bowser Jr. toward the end of the film is the dragon from the 2017 video game Super Mario Odyssey.
The entire scene with the dinosaur is a direct copy of the Tyrannosaurus's death scene from Don Bluth's animated film The Land Before Time (1988).
The weapon Bowser and Bowser Jr. use to turn Mario and Luigi into babies is based on the Super Scope 6, a weapon found in several Super Nintendo games.
